Big Brother 1’s Nick Bateman who was the first to break the news that Brian would be taking up the role of host via Twitter, tweeted his support for Dowling saying: “I am very happy for Brian Dowling, he is more than capable. I feel that C5 have gone for safety rather than a clean sweep and new talent.”
This was a view echoed by some BB fans who had voiced concerns at Channel 5’s decisions to include ex-Housemates in their upcoming advertising campaign as well as Brian in the role of presenter, having hoped that the new series on Channel 5 would represent a clean break from the show’s history on Channel 4.
Davina McCall, the Channel 4 Big Brother host since for 11 regular Big Brother series and 8 celebrity series including Ultimate Big Brother last year, also gave Brian her blessing to step into her role, hailing him as “a natural choice” for the show.
Speaking to The Daily Star Davina said: “He has buckets of personality and tons of TV experience. I know he’ll be a real laugh and very watchable – I’m backing him all the way!”
Anna Nolan, who finished as runner-up to Craig Philips in the first series of Big Brother in the UK, wrote in her Irish Herald column that the talented Brian Dowling would “take Big Brother by storm”, adding “He is spontaneous, professional and naturally funny.”
However Anna also offered a word of advice to Brian – not to try to mimic Davina in anyway. This comes after Brian has been using McCalls catchphrase “I’m coming to get you!” on camera at the new Big Brother advert shoot and tweeting “Have a feeling I may say “Big Brother House this is Davina!!! It’s what I’m use to hearing!!” (sic) while also thanking Davina for her support.
